Going to Church is all good and well. Pastors often have good messages for their congregation and it’s always a good idea to listen to the way others interpret the Message of God. But you need to remember that you need to build a personal relationship with God for Him to become a real part of your life. Today’s devotional is all about how you can learn to let God into your life. How you can befriend Him and build a close relationship.
2 Chronicles 7:14
“If my people who are called by my name humble themselves, and pray and seek my face and turn from their wicked ways, then I will hear from heaven and will forgive their sin and heal their land.”
I am God’s only begotten, but you are also His child. So I am your brother. But I want to be your Friend. So many of God’s children are so overwhelmed by the fact that I am His Son, that they don’t think they can talk to me like a friend talks to a friend. When I came down to earth I gave up My throne for you. I have come to be on your level so that I can meet you where you are. Nothing is too small to talk to Me about. And nothing is too big. I am interested in every part of your life. So talk to Me. I am listening.
You don’t have to come to church to speak to Me. You can pray while you are driving. While you are in the bathroom. While you are having a drink at the bar. There is no place that is far away from Me. Where you are, I am. Just say my name and I will be there, listening. No topic of conversation is beyond my interest. I am interested in every small detail of your life. And I do not sleep or take a break. You can speak to me at any time or at any place. Like a friend to a friend.
When you speak to Me in prayer, I am listening. But my answers to your prayers are found in the Bible. I speak to each of my children in his or her personal life through the words of the Bible. I also speak to you in small ways. So you will not hear my voice like a loud thunder but in a still small voice. That means that sometimes you need to quiet your mind. You need to let go of all the racing thoughts and tune your mind's ear into my small voice. At first it might not be easy to know which one is your own thoughts and which one is My voice, but as you grow closer to Me, you will hear me clearer and clearer.
The good news of My love and grace is like a bright light. You don’t put a lamp or a candle under a bucket, but you put it on a stand so it lights up the whole room. Just like that you must share My light to everyone you come into contact with. First your own family and friends and then strangers, and also your enemies. It is easy to lay down your life for a friend, but there is no greater love than to lay down your life for your enemies. So pray for those who hate you. Show kindness to those who show you unkindness. Showering love and kindness on their heads like warm water. So they too can feel its warmth.
In the old testament it was not so easy to speak to God as it is today. People had to go to the priest in order to ask God anything. Then one day Jacob had a dream. He was sleeping in the desert with his head on a stone for a pillow. He had betrayed his own brother and was running away from him. Fearing for his life. But he dreamt of a staircase that touched the earth next to his head, and reached all the way into Heaven. With Angels walking up and down. The ladder is Me. I am your ladder between Heaven and earth. My death on the cross serves as a link between you and God the Father. So you can pray openly and freely without the help of a priest or pastor.
Do you know that in some countries people get killed for praying to Me. Even calling yourself a Christian will get you imprisoned and killed. So if you find yourself in a country where you have the freedom to serve Me and pray to Me, then you are more blessed than so many of My followers. So I urge you, for their sake, do not take prayer lightly. Do not forget to speak to Me. Do not neglect your time with Me and the reading of My word. For some people it isn’t even possible to own a Bible. They have to keep bits and pieces of scripture hidden away so they can memorize it quickly before it gets taken away. So count yourself blessed if you have a Bible you can read every day. And don’t forget to thank God for the privileges you have in your freedom.
1 John 5:14 ESV
“And this is the confidence that we have toward Him, that if we ask anything according to His will He hears us.”
