Before Making Major Life Decisions

At some point, — if it hasn't already— life will serve you some big decision moments like changing careers or relocating to a new city. The choice you make will define the trajectory of your life for better or for worse.

Given the stakes, that's why you should stop and pause as you find your true path. Too often, we rush into big things only to regret them later. The goal of today’s advice is to set you a step in the right direction by teaching you how to approach major life decisions with wisdom and a sense of purpose:

Pause and Reflect

During the pause and reflect phase, you should ask yourself the following questions:

Answers to these questions will tell you whether the decision you are making is worth it.

Tune Into Your Inner Voice

Everyone has an inner voice including you but as we grow older, the inner voice is drowned by pressure from society, peers, work, and so on. To tune to your inner voice, observe yourself especially as you interact with the things you love.

Also, look back at your childhood and ask what it was that made you lively and wild. Famously, Einstein developed his obsession with the natural world from interacting with a magnet as a five-year-old. What is your Einstein moment?

Is it likely that you still harbor childhood dreams that are still unfulfilled? Obviously, listening to your inner voice will take more than just going back memory lane. You also have to do some mindful meditation.

As a first step, you should declutter your life such that you are free of any distractions. Only then should you journal your thoughts and act on them. The point of doing all this is to take advantage of your intuition which remains a powerful guide throughout your life. Pay attention to how decisions feel in your gut. Do they excite you? Do they empower you?

By listening to your natural guide, you make sure that decisions are entirely yours.

Gather Information

Even as you follow your gut, it is important to gather information. Research will validate any decision you are about to make, especially if you are committing yourself financially. As Warren Buffet and other financial advisers like to say, “The markets don't care about your feelings.”

Keep in mind that what we call gut feeling evolved in the African Savannah and the world we now live in is far more complex than what our ancestors had to deal with. So, take time to research and understand all the factors involved. Speak to people who have taken similar paths, seek expert advice. Weigh the pros and cons.

Seek Spiritual Guidance

Every major decision you make should be tempered with spirituality because you are not just a clump of cells. You are also a spiritual being in connection with the universe. Spiritual guidance can come from a lot of sources. You can consult with your spiritual teacher or follow the teachings of revered books like the Bible or the Koran.

What this does is that it will bring you peace and satisfaction.

Take Small Steps

Anyone who's ever been successful at anything knows this one thing: there is no single stride that will get you where you want to go. In other words, success is a matter of small steps strung together by determination.

Involve others

You've probably heard that no one is an island more time than you can stomach and that's because it is so true. Some people depend on you, and that you depend on. Their opinion also matters as you seek to make a life-changing decision. Your trusted friends, family, and mentors can guide you when it comes to finding your true path. Consult with them.

Of course, there is more to this topic that has been covered here but we have the bases covered when it comes to making important life decisions. If you stick to the advice in this simple guide, you can hardly go wrong.

Affirmation

Before you leave, here’s a daily affirmation to guide you through life’s major decisions:

"I trust in my ability to make thoughtful choices. With clarity and purpose, I navigate life’s uncertainties, confident that every decision leads me closer to my true path."
