Today, I, Thomas Edison, want to share with you a piece of wisdom that has been a guiding light for me in the past. My quote, we often miss an opportunity because it's dressed in overalls and looks like work, is a way of getting you to see that work shouldn’t be ignored, just because you don’t feel like it. What good will come from that? You’ll end up with nothing, just because you thought it was too much effort.
I see work as a challenge, a little bit like a mystery that I need to solve. It isn’t easy sometimes, and the path has twists and turns along the way, but I would rather walk those than sit still and never call anything my own. I want to hold success in my hands, but I can’t if I am too afraid of the work that goes behind it. Opportunities are like doors, with hidden treasures behind them. If you never open them, you will never receive the treasure. The hard work is in getting them to open though, and many people simply don’t want to do it, but I do, and that’s how I achieved so much in my life.
I enjoy opportunities because they excite me. I cannot think of what a life without opportunity would be like. Rather dull, I’d day. Does your life seem dull at the moment? What opportunities are you missing out on, just because you are afraid of a little hard work? You know that you don’t have to be missing out at all, right? Work is where you learn, where you grow, the same way that I did.
I wouldn’t be where I am today without the hard work behind my achievements. Every time I tackle a problem, I feel like I am adding to my toolbox of knowledge. I feel like the skills I build help me through life, rather than allow me to see problems and not know what to do about them. There is something amazing about knowing how clever you are when you learn something new, even if it took some effort to get there.
Rolling up your sleeves and getting to work seems like something not many people want to do anymore. I don’t know why. Maybe it’s because we live in a world where what we want can be so easy, and quick, to get. Think of technology. Without technology though, and the hard work it took to get these gadgets, we wouldn't be able to access things so quickly, would we? Somebody had to do all that hard work so you could have your phone or tablet, and that’s the reality of it.
Here's a secret for you -work is not an enemy - it's a friend and guide, and a builder. Each time you work on a project, solve a puzzle, or learn a new skill, you're remembering how to do something well, something incredible. The only enemy you need to be worried about is the fear of work, the fear of giving your time to a project. You don’t need to be afraid at all, because what you get at the end makes it all worth it.
