Unfortunately, a majority of our parents back in the day did not include “How to process thoughts and emotions’’ into the curriculum of things we were taught as children.

Here's a very common illustration: When you cried as a child, you were most likely asked to stop. At most, we were pacified with a toy or any other gift meant to make us 'just forget it and move on'. As a result of this, the concept of 'processing emotions' becomes alien to us, right into our adulthood.

If you fall into this category of people, it's up to you to teach yourself how to disperse negative emotions most healthily.

You need to re-educate yourself

As humans, we are wired to develop thought and behavioral patterns. Whenever we encounter a situation that triggers a certain emotion, there is already a line of reflex action that we are likely to undertake.

The mind is wired to take comfort in things that it finds familiar because it has been programmed to do so. This explains why you do not care to process your emotions healthily. Your mind knows no other way to handle a situation like that.

By default, how you think will affect the way you act; by extension, the quality of your actions will determine the quality of your life. So, it's only right that you make a concerted effort to navigate your thoughts and emotions toward a positive and developmental side.

Your emotions can only define your personality if you allow them. You only have limited control over your emotions and whatever event or entity triggers them. What you do have complete control over is your reaction to these emotions.

When you are blasted by a surge of negative emotions, how well do you handle it? Do you immediately put yourself down and make yourself suffer the consequences? Are you one of those who let their emotions define their productivity and overall well-being?

The divine realm is calling on you, to re-educate yourself. They want us to realize how beautiful our lives would become when we start reacting to things differently.

Feelings and emotions are subjective

Feelings are indeed a reflection of the emotions that we feel. It's also true that these feelings and emotions are subjective.

Two people may be put in the same dire situation, yet both may have different reactions to it. If you're the type that runs scared when they are faced with difficulties, it doesn't mean you're any less of a person than the one who doesn't.

All of your current feelings and emotions are shaped by your previous experience. But you do have the power and opportunity to re-educate yourself. Even your reflexes can be controlled-the divine realm calls on you to realize this.

Acknowledge your feelings and emotions

Most people are ignorant of the fact that they cannot process their emotions. They are not even aware that they carry a load. This denial will make such a person harbor these emotions to an extent where they might explode.

You must accept that you feel a certain kind of way after a person's actions or an event. You also have to know that it's okay to feel whatever you're feeling. This is the first step of processing emotions.

Learn to communicate your emotions

After you realize and accept that your emotions were triggered, you should then proceed to communicate with the people that triggered you.

Speaking up about your feelings will stop the hurt and pain coming from people who didn't know they were responsible. It's okay to ask for an apology; it's okay to seek closure.

As an alternative, you could vent to a close friend or relative that understands us. You could as well write a letter. Studies show that we heal faster and healthier when we communicate our feelings through words.

Teach yourself not to react in the heat of your emotions -regret is a worse feeling compared to what you're feeling at that moment.

Seek professional help

There are trained professionals who can help us re-educate ourselves. Bottling up emotions is among the primary causes of mental health disorders.

So, if you notice you're beginning to show symptoms such as constant anxiety, depression, mental burnout, etc, you could seek out professional help and get started on your journey to mental liberation.
